Aerial photography: plan the frame before the flight

A concise field guide to light, shutter speed, reflections and safe communication in the air.

Altitude does not create composition

An elevated view reveals patterns, boundaries and scale, but it can also flatten a landscape into an unreadable surface. Decide what the photograph is about before takeoff: a river’s curve, the relationship between roads and fields, or the shadow of a structure.

Choose light that describes shape

Low sun creates long shadows and makes terrain legible. Midday light is useful when you need to see through water or reduce building shadows. Haze lowers contrast quickly at distance, so a clear day matters more than dramatic clouds for many survey-style images.

Settings that survive vibration

Start with a fast shutter speed and adjust ISO before accepting blur. Stabilization helps, but it cannot fully compensate for aircraft movement or a sudden bank. Avoid pressing a lens or camera against a vibrating window.

  • Use continuous autofocus for moving viewpoints.
  • Choose a moderate focal length to reduce haze and simplify framing.
  • Shoot short bursts only when the angle changes quickly.
  • Keep loose straps and equipment secured.

Windows, doors and communication

Plexiglas windows create reflections, color shifts and softness. If an approved open-window or door-off flight is available, follow the operator’s instructions exactly. Discuss the route and desired turns with the pilot before takeoff; cockpit time is not the place for improvised hand signals.

Safety comes first. Follow the pilot, operator and local aviation rules. Never ask for a maneuver that compromises the flight.

Edit for a coherent set

A strong aerial series alternates wide context with tighter graphic details. Keep horizon treatment and color consistent. The unusual viewpoint is already dramatic, so restrained editing usually ages better than heavy clarity or saturation.
